GREENVILLE, S.C. – Judy Wong of Many, La., coaxed enough fish out of her “hot hole” Saturday on Lake Keowee to claim the 2008 Women’s Bassmaster Tour Championship by a mere 6 ounces.
Wong, who caught the majority of her fish from the warm-water outflow of the Oconee Nuclear Station, weighed in a five-fish limit at 6 pounds, 5 ounces to give her a three-day total of 26-10. Wong’s catch unseated defending champion Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., from the leader’s chair Saturday and the women’s bass fishing throne. Martin-Wells had one of just two other five-fish limits during the final round and had a 7-9 bag for a 26-4 total.Read more >>
“This time of year with the water temperature being as cold as it is, I knew (the hot hole) was the place I wanted to start,” Wong said. “That’s what I did all three days. I’d catch my limit and then try to catch a larger bass. The first day I stayed a little longer and I did cull, and my partner culled, as well. Today I stayed only until about 10 o’clock. Then I knew I had to find a largemouth to make sure I had enough weight to win. I tried that, but it didn’t pan out for me.”
Wong said she was somewhat surprised the winning weight was less than 30 pounds.
“I predicted 40 pounds to win this tournament,” she said. “If any of the women had caught a largemouth – I know one kicker would move you way up. I was hoping to catch a limit of spots and then one largemouth kicker. That didn’t happen. I’m fortunate that none of the other girls caught a kicker, either, or I would have been in trouble.”
Wong caught her larger spotted bass on a Gary Yamamoto Senko in watermelon red or silver metal-flake rigged wacky style. She also caught a few fish on a Fluke, one on a spinnerbait and her largest fish on a Senko rigged on a ¾-ounce football jig.
“I threw a variety of baits,” she said. “I just picked up what I thought these fish would hit. Sometimes they would come up and school, and sometimes they would go down and there wouldn’t be any activity. I think the reason I was able to catch the fish was bait choice. There were other anglers in the hot hole with me on the first day and some of them left there without a fish. I think the difference was bait choice.”
Wong will take home a fully rigged Triton boat and $10,000 in cash, a total prize package of $60,000.
“I’m happy to have all that, but the title means so much more to me,” Wong said. “The women in this group, we all have this passion. We come out here and give it our all. To win this championship, getting to this position – it means so much when we do win.”
Martin-Wells knows that feeling after running away with the inaugural WBT Championship last year in Birmingham, Ala. She also knew that she started the day too far behind.
“I knew it was going to be close,” she said. “I had a 2-pound deficit to make up. That was the problem.”
Martin-Wells, who anchored last year’s catch with several largemouths, couldn’t find them Saturday and had to rely on catching spots with a watermelon candy trick worm on a 3/16th-ounce Tru-Tungsten weight.
“The sun just didn’t come out soon enough,” she said. “I needed the sun to catch the quality of fish. I fished docks and secondary points, but all the dock fish were small. I didn’t have time for the quality fish to get positioned where they needed to be.”
The leader going into Saturday’s round, Dianna Clark of Bumpus Mills, Tenn., struggled with the change from rainy, cold weather to a bluebird day. She managed only two fish and finished in third place with 23-15.
“I just couldn’t locate the bait fish,” Clark said. “They left the area I was fishing. When the bait fish move, the spotted bass move. I tried moving back into deeper water and moving up. They just moved on me and I didn’t make the adjustment.”
Clark, the 2006 Toyota WBT Angler of the Year, said it didn’t take long for her to realize she was in trouble.
“When I showed up there and didn’t have a bite in the first 20 minutes, I said ‘uh-oh,’ she said. “They’re not here, they’re not feeding, it ain’t happening. And I stayed there a little longer than I should have.”
On the non-boater side, Karol Whitehurst of Winnsboro, Texas, didn’t even have to catch a fish Saturday to claim the title. However, she did manage to put two fish in the boat to add to her three-day total, which ended up at 15-8.

Judy Wong Bruce Mathis Director - Women's Bassmaster Tour
"Thank you to my family and friends, those watching on ESPN and those present today. Thanks to my sponsors: Ranger, Mercury, Toledo Bend Tourism, Gary Yamamoto, American Rodsmiths, Quantum, Tru Tungston, Tru Turn and Navionics, for the support throughout the years.
Thank you to BASS and ESPN for this wonderful opportunity and to all the fine sponsors of the WBT for their support.
A special thanks to Academy Sports and Outdoors for inviting me to be a part of Team Academy and for coming onboard with the WBT to help elevate women's sports.
The words of the song you heard (when she was being driven in the arena), 'The River' by Garth Brooks, has a lot of significance to me.
A dream is like a river ever changing as it flows and a dreamer is just a vessel that must follow as it flows. Being on this stage and being able to pursue a career in professional bass fishing has been a dream for me. There has been many challenges, never knowing what's in store, but like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my skies. Too many times we stand aside and let the water slip away. Don't put off til tomorrow what has been today.
If any of you ladies or men have ever dreamed of becoming a professional angler or ever wanted to compete in a bass tournament, don't sit upon the shoreline and say you're satisfied, chose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tide.
I know that my dreams will never come true unless I try, so with the good Lord as my captain, I will sail my vessel until the river runs dry.
Thank you and God Bless."

PAM MARTIN-WELLS WINS INAUGURAL WOMEN’S BASSMASTER TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Georgia Angler Scores Wire-to-Wire Victory at Lake Mitchell
There was no catching Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., in the inaugural Women’s Bassmaster Tour Championship as she capped a wire-to-wire victory Saturday with the largest limit of the three-day event.
Anchored by two big largemouth bass, Martin-Wells’ five-fish limit weighed 15 pounds, 8 ounces Saturday on the Bassmaster Classic stage for a tournament total of 38-7, more than seven pounds heavier than the nearest competitor. Martin-Wells takes home a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $50,000 and $10,000 in cash with the win.
Although Martin-Wells headed into Saturday’s finale with a 4 ½-pound lead, she refused to relax even after she had a limit of spotted bass in the livewell by mid-morning.
Instead, she went to her largemouth pattern of flipping grass to ensure none of the other 11 finalists could get close.
“I basically did the same thing all three days,” Martin-Wells said. “The difference was that today after I got a limit of spots, the largemouths decided to bite. I didn’t second guess my game plan. I just did it.
“When I put that first largemouth in the boat that was pushing five pounds I still wasn’t comfortable. These anglers are so good there was no way I was comfortable. When I caught the 4 ½-pounder, I still wasn’t comfortable but I felt pretty good.”
Martin-Wells fished various points with a Carolina rig to catch the Coosa River spotted bass. She used a Wave Worm Lizard, Tiki Stick and Zoom Baby Brush Hog. Martin-Wells flipped the grass with a Tiki Stick, Super Hog and jig with a 1-ounce Tru-Tungsten weight to get through the heavy cover.
When the field was set for the championship, Martin-Wells qualified in the 12th and final spot on the pro side.
“I qualified last, but from that point on I was on a mission to finish first in the championship,” she said. “And it’s hard to describe actually sitting in that boat for the ride around the arena. This is something nobody can take away. I will always be the first to win this championship.
“I’ve been doing this for 21 years, so I’ve seen the good, bad and the ugly. The Women’s Bassmaster Tour is definitely the best. I knew when ESPN and BASS got involved this would give the ladies the recognition we deserve.”
Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., tried to make a run at Martin-Wells, but she knew it would require an exceptional day of fishing. Glasgow managed 12-14 to finish with 31-5.
“A four-pound lead is really hard to make up,” Glasgow said. “But I also knew this lake is capable of producing a 20-pound bag. I caught a lot of nice fish on a Shaky Head, but I just had too much ground to make up.” Glasgow tipped the Shaky Head with a Zoom finesse worm in green pumpkin with a chartreuse tip. If you got it in front of one, it would hit it,” Glasgow said. “I just didn’t catch enough big ones.”
Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas, also made a late run with the second-largest bag of the day at 12-15 for a 28-12 total. Robinson was hoping history would repeat after she came from behind to win the 2007 WBT season-opener on Lake Amistad.
“I knew I couldn’t catch Pam unless she stumbled, but I was going to give her a run for her money. At Amistad, that’s what happened. Seven stumbled and I jumped over all of them. This time, Pam didn’t stumble.”
Weakened from a bout with pneumonia, Tammie Muse of North Little Rock, Ark., still managed to finish fourth at 25-12, while Linda Sands of Cullman, Ala., rounded out the top five with 25-5, which included a final-round catch of 9-14.

Meet Londyn Ann Scott

Londyn Ann Scott
|
At the Bull Shoal Tournament,Steve Scott (aka Lurch) was anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child. The WBT anglers were pleased to meet the newest member of Lurch's family this week at the Women's Bassmaster Tour Championship. Proud Mom, Katie, brought daughter, Londyn Ann Scott to her very first fishing tournament. Londyn is like her dad and has a quick smile for everyone who comes near. At only five months old Londyn listened as dad was the master of ceremonies for the 24 Championship qualifiers. Maybe one day Londyn will join the tour as a competitor or maybe even as the MC. Welcome Londyn.

Final Weigh-in
Lucy Mize, first women to walk across the WBT Championship stage
|

They said it . . . quotes from the WBT Championship.
By Conny Jenkins*
Pam Martin Wells - When asked what the most important factor was in her winning, "Faith in what I was doing. I have been collecting information on this lake ever since it was announced it would be here. I am not a spot fisherman, on the lake I guide on there are no spots, so I needed to learn as much as possible. I have a notebook (about 2-3 inches thick) packed with information on lake levels, temperatures, everything I would need to know to help me catch spots. I formed this plan about two months ago and never swayed from my game plan".
Sheri Glasgow - "It's been an awesome, historical event. I had a great time, besides this being a good fishing week for me it has been an indescribable experience this week. I can't wait to do it again!"
Linda Sands - Who caught her limit every day. "The fish were biting but there was no size. There are some awesome spots in this lake that turned off."
Tammie Muze - Who was battling pneumonia. " Each day by 10 a.m., I was really whopped. I just could not shake the fatigue. I did the best I could and am not disappointed, but we needed to be 110% and healthy. We were kept really busy all week."
Lucy Mize - On being in last place going in to today. "I do not know why I could not catch more fish the first two days. I believe every thing happens for a reason. I have always wanted to walk across the Bassmaster Classic stage. Being in last place gave me the opportunity to be the very first women to ever walk across the Bassmaster Classic stage to weigh fish.
Pam Martin Wells - "After I caught my limit I said to my observer, "I have not ever fished that spot over there, but it's calling me. We went over to that grass bed and I was able to catch a fish and cull. It ended up being largest bass."
Juanita Robinson - on her place fish and the experience. "It was an absolute marvelous experience. Even though I did not win it I feel like a winner. I knew if Pam caught fish I wouldn't be able to catch her, but I was going to give it a run."
Robin Babb - "We had so much emotion involved in this tournament. It just started sinking in what just happened. Walking across the stage and seeing all the fans of bass fishing and being a part of it - I have never felt anything like that before. It was just great."

MARTIN-WELLS EXTENDS LEAD AT INAUGURAL WBT CHAMPIONSHIP
Pam Martin-Wells’ hands were shaking as she exited the stage at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex with the lead in the inaugural Women’s Bassmaster Tour Championship.
With only Saturday’s final round remaining, Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., holds more than a four-pound lead, but even that significant margin may not allow her to sleep better on the eve of the history-making finale of the first WBT season. The winner of the event will receive a $50,000 Triton/Mercury rig and $10,000 cash.
Martin-Wells weighed in 10 pounds, 9 ounces Friday for a 22-15 total from Lake Mitchell. With weather conditions conducive to spotted bass fishing, the leader knows that fishing conditions could change quickly on the Coosa River impoundment.
“This is an excellent fishery,” Martin-Wells said. “The weather has been holding it back. All of these (11 other) ladies are excellent anglers, so I won’t be comfortable until it’s over. I know that, at any moment, somebody could come in with a 20-pound bag.”
Although she may be anxious, Martin-Wells said she had confidence in the strength of her pattern holding out for one more day.
“I should be able to do what I’ve done,” she said. “I did a lot of running around because I didn’t want to burn any one spot.”
Looming in second place are two anglers at 18 pounds, 7 ounces: Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., and Tammie Muse of North Little Rock, Ark.
Muse, who held second place alone after the opening day, weighed-in 8-15 Friday.
“I did exactly the same thing I did Thursday,” said Muse, who is trying to recover from a bout with pneumonia. “I used one rod all day and culled four keepers, so I’m not going to change anything. I’m fishing real slow in 35 to 40 feet of water, back and forth in a half-mile area.”
Glasgow, who weighed in 10-6 Friday to move into the tie, said a change of strategy helped her move up.
“The only thing I did differently was I stayed with the fish I caught early yesterday,” Glasgow said. “I made the wrong choice yesterday by leaving those fish. I stayed with them today and was able to do some culling.
“I’m not saying I’ll do the same thing Saturday. If I sit on those fish and don’t get the key bites, I might go fish in some areas where I know there are some four-pound largemouths.”
Only one ounce back in fourth is Tammy Richardson of Amity, Ark., who weighed in 11-1 Friday for an 18-6 two-day total.
“I’m catching all spotted bass and it’s been a morning bite for me,” Richardson said. “After 11 a.m., it gets tough.”
Reigning Toyota WBT Angler of the Year Dianna Clark of Bumpus Mills, Tenn., is fifth at 17-15, followed by Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas, at 15-13.
On the co-angler side, Keri Schieber shot from eighth to first, making her the first Women’s Bassmaster Championship co-angler division champion.
Schieber of Cummings, Ga., brought in five fish for 11-7 Friday after having weighed-in only one fish Thursday.
“Yesterday I switched baits a lot to try to find something they would hit,” said Schieber, who fished from pro Cindy Hill’s boat on Friday. “Cindy said she knew where some fish were and she was right. There were fish all over her spot. I was throwing a Texas-rigged Baby Brush Hog on 10-pound test with a 1/4-ounce Tru-Tungsten weight. I was basically finesse fishing with the Brush Hog. The small weight was the key. I gave Cindy one of my weights and she started catching fish, too.”
The 12 WBT pros return to Lake Mitchell Saturday for the final day of competition, which will determine the first Women’s Bassmaster champion. The women will weigh-in at 3:15 p.m., during the pre-show of the Bassmaster Classic at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.

Keri Schieber wins the Women's Bassmaster Tour Championship Co-Angler Title on Lake Mitchell in Alabama.
By Conny Jenkins
After a slow start in yesterday's weigh-in with a catch of one fish, she was feeling a bit down when her husband, Joe, gave her a pep talk. Joe told her it was an honor that she had qualified for the championship and just to be among the first women she should be proud whether she finished first or last. His pep talk encouraged her. Today Keri weighed in 11 lb 7 oz., the heaviest stringer of the tournament, topping even the top pro stringer weight of Pam Martin Wells.
Before the off limits Keri was able to come to the lake for 5 days of pre-fishing to help prepare her for the tournament and familiarize her with the lake. She feels the “high pressure front yesterday slowed down the bite”. Struggling the first day of the tournament she said “I switched out baits a lot trying to find one that would work”.
Today they were mainly fishing around brush piles in 15 to 20 feet of water. The bite was very slow and difficult to detect. Although the bite was light she was able to catch thirteen fish before 10:30 this morning, of those all but one were keepers bass. Most of the fish were concentrated in one area.
To catch her limit Keri used a Texas rig with a one-fourth ounce weight. She stayed true to her signature bait, a ZOOM baby brush hog. For this tournament she was using a green pumpkin on 10 lb test line. Keri caught her limit mainly finesse fishing, using a spinning reel. She emphasized she had to fish very slowly. Keri fished with Pros Cindy Hill and Sheri Glasgow.
Having experienced a year of fishing as a co-angler on the WBT, Keri joins her twin sister, Teri Neal, as a Pro Angler during the 2007 season. They are known as the “Fishing Twins”.
Angie Everitt the Texas angler who lays claim to Slapout Alabama as the home of her heart garnered an impressive second place win. Angie says of the whole experience this week, "It was a wonderful experience, even if I would have finished twelfth; it would have been worth it".
Angie fished with Dianna Clark today and says, "When we started talking about our grandmothers and how much we missed them, we started catching fish". For Angie every bite counted today. She says "I did not catch any short fish today, every one was a keeper".
Before the off limits Angie was able to pre-fish Lake Mitchell three different times. She said the fish bit much differently than in practice. Fishing a different style from the first place finisher, Angie used a Carolina Rig to catch her fish. She said they varied the depth, fishing in 12 to 25 feet depth. She used 15 lb fluorocarbon line with a 12 lb. leader.
Third place finisher was Mary Croft who also fished deep. Today she caught a hefty four fish in Pro angler Tammie Muse's boat. When one of them would miss a fish they would encourage the other to try to catch it. She said Tammie would say, "I missed one, get it, get it", and so it went like that all day back and forth.
Fourth place finisher Sharon Rushton had kind words for her Pro angler partners saying, “I fished with Tammy Richardson and Tammie Muse and after they had their limits they both stopped fishing to give me a chance. They are great examples of true professional anglers. To do that for your co-angler in a regular tournament would be a great gesture but to stop fishing to make sure your co-angler had an opportunity to catch a fish in a championship tournament is amazing and speaks well of them as individuals and their integrity to the sport. I did catch one fish yesterday because of that”.
Congratulations to all the co-anglers who qualified for the first ever WBT Championship.

What were the lady pro's doing doing on day one and two?
By Conny Jenkins
Pam Martin Wells will be the first woman to grace the front page of the Bassmaster magazine and she may be the first Women's Bassmaster Champion. Pam leads today with over 4 pounds.
Pam's weight today of 10 lb 9 oz boosted her to a position that others may not be able to catch with the slow bite that all the anglers have been experiencing. Pam worked hard all day to get a bigger bite, moving around so she would be able to return to each spot, hopefully saving some fish for the final day. Although she did cull fish she was unable to get a `kicker fish'.
She is using two different patterns but one is predominantly catching the fish. Spring weather has played a role in the tough conditions the women are experiencing. Pam said, “The bad weather changes are the reason for the lower weights. If the weather had not changed we would be seeing many of the women coming in with 16 to 18 pound stringers”.
One reporter asked her if she could catch enough fish to win the championship on Saturday. Pam said, “I hope and pray everything goes my way”.
I was unable to interview Sheri Glasgow but as she sits in second place it would not be surprising to see her bring in a large bag Saturday.
Tammie Muse has been battling fatigue all week due to recovering from pneumonia. Still she has been able to catch enough fish tie with Sheri for second place going into the final day. Tammie said she has fished the same both days and does not plan to change anything on Saturday. She is using one rod. Today she culled four keepers. She is fishing about 30 to 40 feet deep.
Tammy Richardson is fishing slow and said her fish were all a morning bite. Juanita Robinson is dependent on the current, fishing real slow, but does have an all day bite. Dianna Clark says the big ones just aren't biting, “The cold front last week just shut down the bite”. Robin Babb said she is also fishing very slow and said the fish were biting quietly.
Lucy Mize is taking coming in with one fish a day and being in twelfth both days in stride. Lucy has been in enough tournaments to know as she says, `someone has to finish last”. Lucy came to the event to fish for largemouth and she stayed with her plan. Knowing how spring conditions rapidly change she knew the largemouth bite was a risk.

2007 Tournaments
September 20-22, 2007--Red River
Laura Gober of Georgia Gets First Win at Women’s Bassmaster Tour Event in Louisiana
Karol Whitehurst of Texas Takes Second 2007 Win as Co-Angler
SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La - When her primary Red River spot produced zero bass for her Saturday, Laura Gober of Pendergrass, Ga., went to Plan B for the limit of five bass that sewed up a win for her at the Mercury Marine Women’s Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats event out of Shreveport-Bossier City, La.
With a total weight of 34 pounds, 9 ounces, Gober capped off the five-event WBT season by keeping in front of first-day leader Lisa Johnson of Center, Ala., who finished second with 30 pounds, 2 ounces. Third place was taken by one-time WBT winner Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., whose 28-00 put her squarely in place to claim the 2007 Toyota Women’s Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year crown. In fourth was the reigning WBT Championship winner Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., who had 27-12. In fifth place was Jo Dee Lake of Bessemer, Ala., who had 27-00.
Gober’s prize was a $50,000 Triton/Mercury boat rig.
“Last year at Dardanelle I was in the top six, but bombed there this year, so it’s great to come here and finish off the year with a win,” said Gober, who led the event on the second day.
The key to her win was “private water,” spots she didn’t have to share with any other contender.
“I live on Lake Lanier (Georgia), which is deep and clear. When I got here Friday and saw the river, I said, ‘No way,’ not here. I thought I might as well turn around and go home because I’m not used to anything like what I saw on the Red River.
“Then I decided to search for clear water, and found some, but couldn’t get a bite. But I knew bass were in the river, so I went looking for places nobody else was.”
Gober found small, shallow oxbows in 2 feet or less of water. When the spot that produced her limit on Friday didn’t help her out Saturday, she moved to her backup spot, a series of small holes near the Red River’s Jimmy Davis Bridge she’d located earlier.
There she threw a Zoom Baby Brush Hog in junebug and camo colors, plus a Netbait Baby Paca Craw in sapphire and black/blue flake rigged with a 3/16-ounce Tru-Tungsten weight and a blood-red Peter T Force Bead.
The first-day leader, Johnson adapted quickly to the river.
“I’ve never been here before,” said Johnson, co-owner of a tree service business in Alabama. “I had to learn how to work in a river that changes so much — up, then dropping, then up again. It was different each day.”
Her primary lure was a black Zoom Trick Worm rigged with a 1/8-ounce weight and dressed with Rejuvenate, a fish attractant.
In the co-angler division, Karol Whitehurst of Winnsboro, Texas, won taking home $1,000 cash and a Triton/Mercury boat rig valued at $25,000. Her 30-pound, 1-ounce total bested Dianne Kegley or Norphlet, Ark., who finished second with 16 pounds, 9 ounces.
“I’m turning pro next year,” said Whitehurst, 50, an X-ray technician whose Saturday victory was her second this year as a WBT co-angler.
“I didn’t use any techniques here that I used to win at Lake Guntersville (Alabama),” added Whitehurst. “The river was totally different, and I had to adjust each day according to the river conditions and to each pro’s spots and styles.”
Her primary lure was a Texas-rigged Zoom Baby Brush Hog in a green-pumpkin and blue flake finish. Her largest fish of the tournament, a 5-1, came on a custom-made, 1-ounce football jig.
